Since this is going to be a MMORPG type of Naruto game, we could have pets and mounts, that also can level up and learn techniques and skills.
Also, by levels, they could evolve and have their skills greatly increased. But to avoid players disliking the thing, that they are forced to have a tiger if hes/her cat has high level, then the evolve can only happen by getting a certain scroll.

The level up works by allowing player to choose, either use hes pet in battle or not. If he does use the pet, then 25% of received exp in battle gets the pet. (The exp pet needs to lvl up, is also 25% of player's exp needed to lvl up)

Each Level up, the pet gets 3 stat points and 1 JP, that they can use across the four stats. (Each pet starts with 1 stat point in each stat)

Each 5 levels, a pet can evolve to next type, by going to pet trainer and getting a mission to get a scroll.
Big pet size would be like Gamakichi in shippuden, and huge would be like gamabunta.

Pets and Mounts
Baby Hawk > Hawk > Big Hawk > Huge Hawk
Puppy > Dog > Wolf > Huge Dog
Kitten > Cat > Tiger, Lion, panther and so on > Huge Tiger, Lion, panther and so on
Foal > Horse > Big Horse > Huge Horse
Baby Frog > Frog > Big Frog > Huge Frog
Baby Toad > Toad > Big Toad > Huge Toad
...and other suggested...

Special skills
Fighting skill_3 JP
Allows pet to fight in a battle.
Upgrades:
  1. 3 JP for 4 stat point receive on lvl up.
  2. 4 JP for 5 stat point receive on lvl up.
  3. 5 JP for 6 stat point receive on lvl up.


Delivering skill_3 JP
Allows pet to deliver messages, items to another player. (1 item/message type at time)
Upgrades:
  1. 3 JP for 2 item/message type deliver at once.
  2. 4 JP for 3 item/message type deliver at once.
  3. 5 JP for 5 item/message type deliver at once.

Yes, good idea but a confusing part that could be explained further: 25% of the exp from battle goes to pet if pet is used.
But the pet also only requires 25% of the owner's required XP to level up?

how much stronger do these pets get as they grow in size?

+10 to all stats as they grow

Let's say they defeat wanderer (5 exp normally)
25% is 1 exp to pet. And 75% is 4 exp to player.

Let's say pet is level 2, witch is 20 exp to level up normally.
But for a pet to level up, he needs only 5 exp.
Thought this DOES NOT change the exp, what player needs to level up. Player would still need 20 exp, if he was level 2 with level 2 pet.
